    entry, by David

This was such a great summer’s night, despite the cool temperature – actually, a summer night in jeans and a hoodie felt so secure and comforting.

I showed up way too early but wanted to be sure I could find the place (although it was unbelievable easy and central to Toronto). About 10 people were there looking around and starting to move in gear. I found some friends and forgot how long we were talking because the first time I looked out of our circle at least 45 more people had arrived.

By Rozasia there were definitely about 125 people. More and more people and bikes kept appearing (people were bringing their bikes down under the bridge for safe keeping or finding no place to lock up due the obvious overflow of locked up bikes above ware we were).

This space worked so well, maybe because it was so accessible yet anyone walking above wouldn’t really know it was happening except maybe for the music. After the performance by Assault at around 3:30am people started leaving but about 40 or 50 stayed to dance. The mood after the performance seemed very festive and tribal, as people danced they kicked up the sand and dust and the crowd dancing around the main playing area looked so out of a National Geographic’s documentary – Silhouettes dancing in the night, kicking up dust … just picture it.

About 10 minutes into the after dance the cops arrived. I grabbed by camera gear and went up to street level and saw just one cop on the bridge looking over with a powerful flashlight hollering at anyone he saw below. He turned to me as I took a picture and I guess that pissed him off enough to get all short breathed yelling ‘Did I say you could take a picture !!? You must go home right night – get out of my sight!’.

After such a great night I didn’t feel like pushing my luck even thought there is total freedom of press and documenting so legally I think I can stand in a cops face taking pictures and he/she couldn’t actually charge me with anything but would probably do their best to harass and intimate me into stopping. I heard a few people got tickets for trespassing and/or public drinking but hopefully nothing too serious.
