entry, by David
What a great show, and way different from everything I’ve been shooting the last few years. The beginning was like a tiny reunion, catching up with Talli aka, “she’s nubs” from the NoFx song, as well as Melanie from Fat Wreckords. Back when I was listening to mostly punk I was shooting at pretty much every Fawreck show and would see Talli and Melanie probably 3 times a month. It was a totally organic transition into local 19+ indie shows but of course I’m a really nostalgia appreciating person and associate the earlier shows with teenage hood and other carefree days.
Now I remember why it’s so weird trying to write an entry for a show of all local bands. It’s because I’ve seen them so often and don’t always notice the subtleties and can’t think of something I haven’t already said. Or that I know the people in the band so it’s hard to be critical or take it too seriously cus we’re all just friends playing for friends. This type of show featured three out of town bands playing for a completely different crowd from the night before. I feel like local shows have gotten so informal that touring shows are even more of a treat cus of having no idea what to expect. Both make me happy I just need to balance things out so this night doesn’t seem like such a shock.
Dirty Tricks were solid heavy fast rock, I can never describe bands. By The End the last few songs blurred together in structure and style but I enjoyed the set otherwise.
I wish this wasn’t my very first time ever seeing Fifth hour hero, considering I’ve seen their name on other lineups before and this was their last ever Toronto show (or so they say). They’re a Montreal band with a great dynamic between the male and Lead Female vocals, and pretty catchy songs.
the Sainte Catherines were strong, extreme and entertaining too. The songs are good, the band is friendly and even if it’s nothing identifiably unique, they make a way fun show with an instant openness to the crowd. Actually, listen to the myspace tracks - while most of it is just good contemporary punk, there is something kind of different with some of the guitars. And I wish you could hear a recording of just the stuff Chat says between songs, like ‘by being at this show you are supporting separatism…’ I forget the punch line but I was laughing at the time. By The End you would think they were playing the home show end of a long tour, half the crowd was on stage singing and falling over.
