entry, by David

Last night was a half predicable (shit with the operahouse) and half surprising experience.

This was DDMMYYYY’s best show in months (and amazing as it was, not just in comparison) . I have the pleasure of seeing them play about every 6 weeks or so, and the last few times were a little less memorable. I think they were going through a transition or some bigger experiments and for what ever reason, tonight they sounded tighter then ever, playing some pretty complex beats in close to perfect sync.

Also surprising was how Bloodbrothers didn’t make me as crazy as I had hoped for. I think they have focused a little more on playing more precise, closest as possible to the produced and layered album recordings which makes it a little harder to play as fast or energized. They are one of the few bands that I really love on a record but not as into live. I’ve got March On Electric, Children Young Machetes and Crimes and listen with love pretty often.

It’s weird, when I saw them a few years back at the Rockit, with no clue what they would sound like – I was blown away by the energy and uniqueness of the song arrangements. Right after I went and got the CD’s and got so hooked on the songs and production (to this day). Maybe they were just a little slow - I could tell they were completely trying and giving everything they had, but something about the set was a little missing.

Is the Opera House legally aloud to refuse water to it’s clientele? I’ve come to the conclusion that I haven’t had a single good experience at the Operahouse in the last 2 years. Almost every show has had some moment where security or the rules of the space had an unanticipated negative impact on the night.
