entry, by David
So, if anyone noticed I haven't been writing entries lately, or atleast really noticing anything to write about much. This might be just due to a slow summer, and now being the perfect time all creative projects seem to be starting up or presenting again. This has been a great month and I am much so looking forward to the fall.
Tonight was so great, so many friends and three amazing sets as well as tons of amazing posters covering every bit of gallery wall space except behind the stage area. Next time a huge mural as a backdrop would be great, I'm not big on what ever thought was put into a white wall theme. Just kidding, there was so much colour every ware else.
Romo Roto made so much goodness from just two voices on four drums and a few symbols with relatively no guitar/bass-like melody. I was very quite impressed and enjoyed the duo.
… from Houston - I liked Indian Jewelry a lot but got a few mixed reactions from friends further back in the crowd. I think the strobe light added a lot to enhance the sometimes droning psych build up they are (the strobe light only really impacting the first few rows of people). There were also a lot of interesting details that would probably get lost though the distance but none the less I was in the front row drumming along till The End. It was also a total compliment to the punchy chanting of the previous set from Romo Roto, really adding to the talented diversity of the three bands.
Where do I even start with Aids Wolf tonight?
This was my eighth time photographing them and from the first time in 2005 at the original X-pace, always as a huge fan of their creations and live playing. There is an insane amount of precision to their totally screeching and randomly sounding playing, it's always been unbelievable but this time was absolutely the best set.
The last time was just under one year ago (September 17th 2007) with Ruins. Tatsuya Yoshida was impressive but I didn't remember anything too great about that Aids Wolf set, maybe because they had played a slightly better set less then a month earlier at the Silver Dollar.
This will be a tough set to follow up to, and I'm sure Aidswolf will be back.
