    entry, by David

I haven’t been to the Music Gallery for ever – almost two and a half years, minus a shoot with Bruce Peninsula while they were recording just before the New Year.

I came half way through $100. Simone has, realistically the most powerful and marvelous voice I’ve heard live and of any local bands for sure. I came too late to take photos and the place was pack but that’s what turned out to make me feel so lucky for that moment; that all I could do was stand in the very back, and effortlessly take in every detail of her voice filling the best sounding available structure in the city, basically frozen in appreciation till The End of the set.

the Luyas sounded way more refined since the last show (Aug 2nd '07 at Sneaky Dee's) Last time felt kind of like Jessie Stein’s side project, while this set was more about the band and a really nice sound and more confidently played songs. The whistling was nice and I just felt happy through out. So I guess $100 over powered me while the Luyas made me happy – both positive feelings to have from a band.

As with both photo sets, all were taken from the same spot. That’s the downside of the Music Gallery, regardless of the bands energy people feel like (maybe out of implied respect and restraint?) staying seated and being perfectly quiet and still. It’s more like a listening party – or like a classical orchestra concert.

I guess the only other time seeing Rick White must have been when Eric’s Trip played the Opera House with Moneen way way way back, like 2002 I think. I’ll dig up those photos eventually.

I wasn’t familiar with any of his songs so really this was like an hour of sitting back to soothing acoustic solo jams, just spacing out and relaxing from something like eight shoots the last three days.
