entry, by David
Four months and a few days ago I saw Tropics at the Silver Dollar. They were pretty good, but either they’ve progressed miles or tonight I was just in a better personal state and relaxed enough to really appreciate their sound – A two piece progressive mix of blues/indie garage I guess?
Simone is a really creative drummer. One of the unique opportunities while shooting is that it’s easy to watch from uncommon places during a show, like right next to the drummer even if no one else is even close to the stage. Getting to hear the direct acoustic hits off her kit (as apposed to through speakers with the whole mix) is rewarding and totally gives a new perspective of a drummer’s skill and style, with such clarity to their playing.
Huckleberry Friends made me close my eyes and imagine a collage coming to life – This shouldn’t sound odd, lots of people close their eyes and just see the visuals in their heads during a set.
I drifted to a collage of disjointed children in various scenes – the background rotating with the beat - and the music playing on as the soundtrack dictating the movement of the cut out bodies.
